Winter Olympic athletes have strange superstitions

From lucky underwear to lucky socks, most athletes have some kind of lucky charm or routine before competing.

From lucky underwear to lucky socks, most athletes have some kind of lucky charm or routine before competing.

The Today Show recently interviewed a few Olympians about it.

First up, Alpine Ski Racer Bryce Bennett.

“You have to put the left ski boot on first and then the right. I don’t know why," said Bennett.

Snowboarder Arielle Gold is all about Wonder Woman.

“I wear Wonder Woman socks when I’m competing," said Gold.

Snowboarder Maddie Mastro needs a good laugh before competing.

“I always have to wakeup and watch 'The Office,'" said Mastro.

Alpine Skier Thomas Biesemeyer needs a certain food.

“Since age 11, I had baby back ribs the day before the race and I won, so that became a tradition," said Biesemeyer.

Finally, Curling duo Becca and Matt Hamilton.

“For me it’s my mustache, I like to have it for all competition," said Matt Hamilton.

“Maybe we should shave it off," said Becca Hamilton.

Some athletes have superstitions that are incredibly bizarre.

Two-time Olympic gold medal winner Yuzuru Hanyu carries around a Winnie the Pooh tissue box, hence the bears thrown on the ice after he competes.

Cross-Country Skier Sadie Bjornsen has glitter sprinkled on her before competing -- no joke!

Skeleton racer Annie O’Shea puts on way too much heat cream. She says if she’s not burning, she doesn’t think she will do well.

Alpine skier Jackie Wiles drinks mushroom coffee.

Basically, whatever it takes to get the confidence to bring home gold medals for the United States, keep doing it!
