Will any projects at Luke Air Force Base pay for Trump's border wall?

Sen. Martha McSally (R-AZ) said those reports of unfunded projects being cut are misreading the Pentagon's list.

PHOENIX — Defense department projects reported to be on the chopping block to pay for President Trump's border wall may not be cut after all.

The Pentagon released a list of unfunded projects this week along with the criteria for deciding which could be cut to pay for the wall. Some reports followed, claiming all six of Arizona's unfunded projects could be cut.

But Sen. Martha McSally (R-AZ), who has repeatedly said she has assurances Arizona would not be impacted, said those reports are misreading the Pentagon's list.

Among the projects listed are two new buildings at Luke Air Force Base set to be constructed this year. Additionally, one building at Tucson's Davis-Monthan Air Force Base set for 2018 and a new building at Sierra Vista's Fort Huachuca set for 2020 were also on the list.

The Luke AFB projects are an administrative building and a maintenance building for the F-35 squadron.

Officials at Luke AFB said Tuesday they have not been given any guidance about what projects may or may not be cut.

The Pentagon's own memo said none of the projects scheduled to be awarded in 2019 would be considered for cancellation. The only project in Arizona that could be cut is the project at Fort Huachuca.

“Fort Huachuca has a long overdue project from Fiscal Year 2018 that we are actively working to keep off any chopping block and will fight tooth and nail to backfill if needed," McSally's spokeswoman Katie Waldman told 12 News.
