Woman punched, dragged by Goodyear cop has lawyer

The woman seen being dragged by a Goodyear police officer now has a civil rights attorney.

Renee Armenta, the woman seen on video being dragged by a Goodyear police officer onto the hot pavement, now has a lawyer.

Anthony Ramirez, a civil rights attorney, says he and his client will not be rushing to file a civil suit against the City of Goodyear.

"Right now we are focusing on the criminal charges Miss Armenta is facing. That's our first step is to make sure she is represented," said Ramirez.

Ramirez said he will go on to thoroughly investigate the case himself, and if he and his client feel there is still a case to pursue, they will do so within the next six months.

Armenta was driving home without a license on September 6, when the Goodyear officer scanned her registration and discovered her license was revoked.

After he pulled Armenta over, according to documents, Armenta became argumentative and refused to comply with his order.

The documents go on to say that the officer noticed Armenta make a sudden move, causing him to fear imminent physical assault.

"We advocate that clients comply with police commands. That's not the situation here. The situation is, 'did the police officers response to Miss Armenta's behavior, was it reasonable,'" said Ramirez.

Armenta is charged with resisting arrest, marijuana possession, drug paraphernalia, and driving without a license. Ramirez said her first hearing is slated for Sept. 20.
