What should you do with your old car seats? Recycle them.

Experts recommend getting rid of old, damaged and expired car seats rather than reusing or reselling them, because they can be dangerous for the precious cargo riding around in them.

PHOENIX - Whether the child outgrows it or a crash is involved, at some point, car seats are no longer useable. Safe Kids Maricopa County, NARPRO and the City of Tempe along with other local organizations, are partnering up to recycle car seats.

Experts recommend getting rid of old, damaged and expired car seats rather than reusing or reselling them, because they can be dangerous for the precious cargo riding around in them.

From April 1st to April 25, Valley residents can drop off used car seats to be recycled at the following Valley locations.

  • Community Tire & Auto Repair (various Valley locations)
  • Hi-Tech Car Care (Phoenix)
  • Martin's Auto Repair (Phoenix)
  • Schulte Automotive Services (Phoenix)
  • The Auto Shop (Phoenix)
  • Good Works Auto Repair (Phoenix)
  • S&S Tire (various Valley locations)
  • River Crossing Storage & RV (Avondale)
  • Southern Pavilion Self Storage (Mesa)

Recycled car seat parts can be used for things like dog shelter beds and leashes. Additionally, the 10th Annual "Keep Our Planet Neat, Recycle Your Car Seat" event will accept car seats for recycle from Tempe and Guadalupe residents on April 28 from 7-1 p.m., at the Tempe Fire Training Facility at 1340 E. University Dr. That's where crews will dismantle and recycle the car seats.

Residents from all other Valley cities need to drop the unwanted car seats off at the Valley locations listed above through April 25.
