Two teens injured after 'messing around' with gun, police say

The two teens are expected to recover from the non-life threatening injuries.

PHOENIX - Police say two teens were injured after “messing around” with a gun that went off.

The teens tried to cover up what happened by saying they were robbed, but police didn’t buy their story.

According to family, one of those teens is 16 years old and is the one who was handling it when a shot was fired, struck him in the hand, piercing it and then hitting the second teen’s shoulder.

“It could've been worse,” said Antonio Alvarez, the 16 year old’s brother.

He’s unsure where the gun came from. Police also have not commented where the weapon came from, but the 16 year old's mom, Rosario Espinoza, says she’s never seen her son with a gun and does not own any firearms.

Police say the teens were at Puesta del Sol Apartment in south central Phoenix when the shooting happened. The minors drove to the 16 year old’s home where officers responded.

They tried to fabricate a story, saying they were robbed, but police say they determined the story was not true.

Both teens are expected to recover.
