Active shooter training hits the East Valley

Instructors teach skills, to help in a self-defense situation.

GILBERT, Ariz. - In a world where violence hits the headlines hard and fast, it might be good for civilians to practice self-defense.

That was the focus of a workshop in Gilbert this weekend. These training, scenario-based self-defense workshops are held quarterly and can be centered around everything from home invasion to active shooters.

Coaches Sam Sade and Joe Edmondson at "World Champions Alpha Krav Maga" say you just can't be too careful anymore.

“They're learning things that can potentially mean the difference in life or death,” Edmondson said.

The training includes basics in self-defense as well as hands-on take-downs during an attack with a deadly weapon. The krav maga workshop is for ages 14 and up and calls for focus, awareness and instinctive momentum.

“You're learning how to create power and create energy out of your own body, but unlike traditional marital arts, where they're breaking boards or doing forms, we eliminate that," Edmondson said. "This is all street self-defense."

The class practices things like staying on the defense even after falling down as well as how to hone in on skill versus strength in a severe circumstances.

Edmondson adds that the course is designed to be realistic, because an attacker with a gun can catch anyone off guard.

“We don't wrap our hands because we're not wearing gloves on the street," he said. "We might be in flip flops or sandals and we need to learn how to defend ourselves in those situations."

The workshops are open to those who want to channel their inner strength to be able to react effectively without thinking twice.
