3 teens started brush fire in north Phoenix, investigators say

Investigators determined the fire was accidental. The teens were released into their parents' custody.

PHOENIX — A brush fire near 63rd Avenue and Happy Valley Road that started Tuesday afternoon is now out.

Fire investigators said three 16-year-olds, two girls and one boy, started the fire by lighting off fireworks. The teens immediately sought police to let them know what they did, investigators said.

Investigators said the three were released into their parents' custody. Police and fire investigators determined the fire was accidental and turned over their report to the county attorney's office.

Two state land firefighters, who were part of a team assisting crews, reported minor injuries and were taken to a hospital to be checked out. There were no other injuries reported.

Firefighters successfully protected homes in the area from the flames, which spread over the nearby mountain before crews extinguished the fire.
