Verify: Are wrong-way driver prevention systems working?

We verify if the detection systems are making a difference.

PHOENIX- Early Wednesday morning police caught up with the latest wrong-way driver. Like many other wrong way drivers, the man was impaired, according to officials.

Arizona has seen a rash of wrong-way drivers over recent years and have invested heavily to put an end to it.

Thermal cameras were put in on parts of I-17 and I-10. Signs were placed at strategic locations, all part of a plan to reduce the amount of wrong-way drivers.

Arizona's Department of Transportation said its thermal camera system is working. Catching more than 30 drivers going the wrong way already since being implemented. The system allows police to be dispatched to intercept the driver even before a 9-1-1 call can come in.

According to DPS statistics, the situation is getting slightly better compared to last year. Compared to this week in 2017 the number of wrong-way incidents (21 fewer), wrong-way collisions (three fewer) and fatal collisions (four fewer) are down. While the number of wrong way DUI arrests are up by 33.

Numbers do show some improvement, but with 16 deaths in 2018 already, there is room for improvement.
