'Worst 2 weeks of our life': Family of pregnant woman shot speaks about recovery

Doctors were able to deliver the woman's baby, who is 2 months premature. The woman is still fighting for her life in the hospital.

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. — A woman is fighting for her life in the hospital after she was shot in the head, authorities say.

Audra Jones, a 30-year-old Casa Grande woman, was pregnant at the time of the shooting and her baby boy was delivered two months premature.

"We get a phone call saying our daughter had been in an accident," said Audra's father Thomas Jones.

Thomas Jones and his wife were getting ready for bed at their home in Nevada last month when they got the gut-wrenching news. Their daughter was in an accident in Casa Grande.

"There's no way you could ever prepare for anything like this," Jones said.

They jumped into he car and made what felt like the longest drive of their lives. First responders gave them more information while on the way to the hospital.

"It was actually, there was a shooting," Jones said.

The Pinal County Sheriff's Office was called out to a home on the 5900 block of N. Fuchsia Street for a burglary. When deputies arrived, the found Audra in the bedroom with a gunshot wound to the head.

PCSO says the woman's boyfriend, 23-year-old Javier Figueroa, came home 20 minutes later and had blood on him. He told the authorities the shooting was an accident.

Figueroa was arrested and is facing aggravated assault and weapon misconduct charges at the moment. PCSO says it is an ongoing investigation and Figueroa could face additional charges.

"I just don't buy it. I'll just let the justice system work this," said Jones.

Audra went into emergency surgery and was placed in a medically induced coma. Doctors delivered her baby boy two months premature.

"It's been the worst two weeks of our life," said Jones.

Audra and her baby defied the odds and are still fighting for their lives in the hospital.

"For her to be back with her babies, that's her goal," said Audra's father.

Over the course of the past two emotionally exhausting weeks, Audra's family reflected on their daughter's life and remembered one story in particular about a storage unit full of furniture Audra was holding onto for when she moved into a new house.

"Her friend needed furniture, so she gave her the furniture because she needed it," Jones said.

Audra has worked at an Arizona City daycare center for years and her family says she is the most giving person they know.

"She was an amazing girl and is an amazing girl," Jones said.

Despite the heartbreak her family has endured and the uncertainty the future holds, they say they feel blessed that their daughter and new grandson are still with them. They are eternally grateful to the many first responders and doctors who have made that possible.

"There's nothing we can do to, uh, say 'thank you' enough, you know," Jones said.

Audra had another emergency surgery this week and has a very long road to recovery. Her parents have set up a GoFundMe page to help with medical costs but they say they need thoughts and prayers more than anything.
