Flagstaff neighborhood cleans up after massive flood

Five inches of rain fell on the neighborhood in just a few hours.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - A Flagstaff neighborhood is cleaning up after a massive flood caused by five inches of rain in just a few hours.

The neighborhood just below the Shultz Fire burn scar east of Flagstaff has been flooded before, but residents say never like this.

Drainage culverts were installed to carry the water away from the base of Mt. Elden, but they couldn't handle the downpour Wednesday afternoon.

Dead trees and debris quickly clogged up the culverts, sending flood water over Brandis Way and through some homes.

Dani Jones watched a river of mud come through her house. Clean-up crews were there Thursday stripping the floors and walls.

“There was literally a grand rapid coming from that mountain," Jones said.

A few streets away, Beverley Sharp watched the water head toward her house, but go around it. The Sharps have a large dirt berm between them and the mountain.

“For the past two-and-a-half years we’ve been through this," Sharp said.

Coconino County crews managed to clear the debris away and reopen Brandis Way by noon Thursday, but heavy equipment is still there trying to repair the road and culverts.

More rain is expected Friday.
