Police identify man killed in shooting at Phoenix hotel, say he demanded money

The Phoenix Police Department say 40-year-old Aaron Townsend was armed and allegedly demanded money before he was shot at a hotel near the I-17 and Peoria Avenue.

PHOENIX — Police released more details Sunday after a man was shot and killed at a Phoenix hotel Saturday.

The Phoenix Police Department say 40-year-old Aaron Townsend was shot and killed after he entered a room and demanded money from two men inside at a hotel near the I-17 and Peoria Avenue.

According to police, the men did not give Townsend money so he just stood outside and allegedly pointed his gun at a bystander.

One of the men inside the hotel room armed himself and shot Townsend, police said. Townsend was transported to a nearby hospital where he later died.

Police said the man who shot Townsend cooperated with investigators at the scene. Several witnesses were also present and interviewed.

The investigation is ongoing.
