Mesa police officers arrested a man who broke an order of protection to enter his wife's home and barricaded himself inside Thursday morning.

Jesse McCullough, 46, shot at officers outside the home he and his wife share after locking himself inside. A protection order against him had specified he could not go into the home after pointing a gun at his wife, according to police.

The Mesa Police Department said in a release Friday that five officers returned fire.

The only other person inside the home was a man who was cleaning the house. McCullough's wife was not home.

After firing shots at the officers, McCullough agreed to come out of the home without the gun, but police said he tried to fight police officers after coming outside.

Police said McCullough used the other man inside as a shield when he shot at the officers, and forced him to speak to negotiators on the phone.

McCullough faces charges of aggravated assault, kidnapping, burglary, discharging a firearm within city limits and violating an order of protection.
