26 Red Cross volunteers helping out with Florence disaster relief

As Hurricane Florence continues to drench the southeast with unprecedented amounts of rain, Red Cross volunteers from right here in the Phoenix metro are in the disaster zone ready to help people affected by this massive storm.

9/16/18 — Right now, 70 volunteers from our Red Cross region that covers Arizona, New Mexico and El Paso are in North Carolina helping out with disaster relief.

26 of those volunteers of from the Phoenix metro area.

"Preparation is our Hallmark we sent volunteers in place long before this storm began," said Red Cross regional public relations manager Colin Williams.

Williams says his volunteers will be facing unstoppable rains, flooding at historic levels and a disaster that not even close to being at its most severe state.

"Right now the storm is still occurring but they’re out there doing disaster assessment, disaster assessment," Williams said.

Williams says Sunday the team traveled from Macon, Georgia, into the disaster zone where more than 200 shelters are set up with 20,000 displaced residents.

"So at sunrise tomorrow we’ll be able to start on disaster recovery," Williams said.

Williams says he expects this group of volunteers to be in the disaster zone for 15 to 20 days.

So for that reason, the Red Cross can always use volunteers. Williams says you don’t need a special skill-just the willingness to help.

If you can’t volunteer you can always donate via their website at www.redcross.org, by texting 90999 or calling 1800-Red Cross.
